Vertical Turret Lathes (VTL)

Hercules 49" VTL

.

Chuck Diameter:         44inches
Swing Diameter:          44.10inches
Year of Manufacture:    1974
Dimensions:                L118” x W96” X H133”

Table Drive Gear Box: All Gears are hardened and grounded. All shafts are mounted on anti-friction bearings All sliding gears are mounted on splined shafts. The 18 table speeds are obtained through a gear box which is provided with a multiple disc clutch and break for controlling table rotation.

Table: The table is mounted on two sets of double-row roller bearings. These bearings are provided with adjustments to eliminate any radial play that may develop. The thrust forces on the table are supported by means of a non-metallic flat way rotating upon a flat track on the base. Table speeds-revolutions per minute- (18 Selections)- 6, 3, 8, 10, 12.5, 16, 20, 25, 31.5, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200, 250, 315. The clutch and brake are actuated by a single lever on the machine base in front of the speed shift levers.

Feed Boxes: The feed boxes are eclectically powered. They provide for rapid traverse in addition to the 8 feed rate selections.  Feed and rapid traverse is accomplished by reversing the respective motors. Fees Rates-inches per minute- (8 selections)- .151, .268, .481, .866, 1.15, 2.68, 4.81, 8.66.

Turret Slide: The turret slide can be swiveled 45 deg. To both the left and right. The turret ram is balanced by means of a spiral spring which is mounted on the turret slide. The turret has five faces. Two wheels provide for manual horizontal and vertical positioning of the turret ram.

Side Head: The side head is balances by a counterweight located in the column. Manual positioning vertically and horizontally is controlled by a single hand wheel. Moving the wheel in and out will engage either the horizontal or vertical movement of the sidehead unit. A safety interlock is provides to insure that the rapid traverse will operate only when the hand Wheel is located in the middle or neutral position.

Cross Rail Elevation: The cross rail is driven by a reversible electric motor thru a worm gear and a pair of spiral gears.

Feed Screws: All feed screw nuts are arranged with back-lash elimination adjustments.

Lubrication: The table drive gear box, table gearing and table bearing are lubricated by means of filtered oil under pressure. The oil pump is located in the gear box. The oil is pumped from a reservoir in the baser of the column. Each feed box contains an oil reservoir. Oil is distributed to the feed box components by means of a splash system. The ways of the cross rail, saddle, turret slide, side head and side head ram are lubricated manually by means of a pressure gun.

Protective Devices: Pressure switch on gear box oil pump will stop machine if oil pressure falls below safe limits. Oil flow indicator on base under table provided visual check on table lubrication. Limit switches prevent over travel of cross rail, saddle, and side head.
